Short version: one cookie to remember which design you see, and, while the design experiment runs, anonymous counts of how posts are read. No ads, no tracking across sites, nothing sold.
The one cookie
This blog is trying out three designs. The design cookie remembers which one you were shown, so the site looks the same on your next visit. It lasts 30 days, holds only a letter (a, d, or e), and is never shared.
Things kept only in your browser
These stay on your device and are never sent anywhere:
- Light or dark theme (
blog-theme). - Sound effects on or off in the Playful design (
blog-sound). - Your answer to "Which design do you love?" (
blog-design-vote), so the poll remembers it. - Whether you turned analytics off (
blog-analytics).
Analytics
To find out which design helps people finish posts, the site counts a few things with PostHog: page views, reaching the end of a post, playing the narration, share and next-post clicks, switching designs, and your design vote with any note you choose to write. Each count includes the design you saw.
It runs without cookies or browser storage, so every visit is counted on its own and you can't be followed from one visit to the next. Each count also carries the country and the first-level region (state or area) your request came from, which our host Cloudflare add for every web request it serves; the city and the IP address are not stored or sent. The data goes through this site to PostHog's servers in the US.
Nothing is sent if your browser asks sites not to track you (Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control). To turn it off in this browser, open this link; this one turns it back on.
Things that load only when you ask
- Comments come from giscus and GitHub Discussions, and load only when you press "Load comments". To write one you sign in with GitHub, under GitHub's privacy statement.
- Videos use YouTube's privacy-enhanced player (youtube-nocookie.com), which loads only when you press play.
- Share buttons are plain links. Nothing from those services loads unless you use one.
Everything else
Fonts, images, and the narration audio are served from this site itself. The site is hosted on Cloudflare, which handles each request the way any web host does.
